After the success of last year’s inaugural event, the AREC Australasian Auctioneering Championships has now established itself as an integral part of AREC, held over two days this weekend on the Gold Coast.

Under the direction of AREC founder John McGrath, the competition was judged by an independent panel of four, who awarded the AREC2019 Australasian Auctioneer to New South Welshman Jason Andrew.

Mr McGrath said Australasian property auctioneers are the best in the world.

“And we believe a competition where the best of the best fight for this title is an exceptional way of upgrading the skills across both countries.

“Auctioneering at the elite level is an incredible skill for all agents to aspire to, so this will be an ongoing feature at AREC into the future.”

The competition featured three competitors: Bronte Manuel from South Australia, John Bowring from New Zealand and Jason Andrew from New South Wales. Each was hand-picked to represent the top talent from Australia and New Zealand.

Each competitor auctioned the same property, a high-end seven-bedroom Hamptons-style home located in the waterfront precinct of Paradise Waters.

Their arithmetic skill, legislative knowledge and sharp wit were on display as the three navigated a tough simulated bidding sequence.

Mr Andrew said AREC is one of the highlights on the Australasian real estate calendar.

“The concept of showcasing auctions in front of so many wonderful agents is an excellent one, and to be fortunate enough to win is such an exciting thing, especially against such talented competitors,” Mr Andrew said.

Judging the competition were a panel of four independent judges: Kate Strickland, director, Marshall White Brighton; Christopher Mourd, head of franchise services, McGrath; Ned Allison, auctioneer, Harcourts Grenadier; and Brett Trigger, branch manager, Barfoot & Thompson, Manukau, NZ.

The competition was sponsored by AuctionNow.

“When the opportunity arose to sponsor the competition, we jumped at the chance,” said AuctionNow director Damien Cooley.

“To be able to showcase our product live to those in attendance was an opportunity too good to be missed.”
