Salesforce Tower has achieved its “topping out” as Circular Quay gets set to reap the benefits of the new innovation hub.

The 55-storey tower at 180 George Street played host to a ceremony to mark the occasion on 5 May 2022, with the construction of the Foster + Partners-designed behemoth now moving onto the final stages, according to Lendlease, which is responsible for the Sydney Place development, thanks to a joint venture with China’s Ping An Real Estate and Japan’s Mitsubishi Estate Asia.

Taking on the anchor tenancy means Salesforce will occupy levels 34 to 53 of the new building, joined already by Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) on levels 25 to 27, premium flexible workspace provider The Executive Centre on levels 22 and 23, Investible’s climate technology and innovation hub Greenhouse on levels one to three, alongside Wellington Management and a number of Lendlease commercial turnkey suites.

According to Lendlease’s managing director of development Tom Mackellar, “the calibre of tenants, including anchor tenant Salesforce, signals strength in Sydney’s commercial market as demand for city-defining and sustainable workplaces increases post-pandemic”.

When complete, the Sydney Place precinct will include “a revamped Jacksons on George, retail and dining laneways and a major public square on George Street”.

With the tower set to be completed later this year, Sydney Place has already been awarded a Platinum WELL Shell and Core rating and the Green Building Council of Australia’s Design & As Built 6-Star Green Star, and will reportedly be targeting a 5.5-star NABERS energy rating.

For Salesforce ANZ and ASEAN chief executive Pip Marlow, “it’s so exciting to be reaching this milestone”.

She acknowledges that “the last two years have completely transformed the way we think about work and we are excited to design a space for our employees that fosters connection, creativity and fun”.

“Our space will be designed not just for us but also for the community with shared spaces, training floors and a core focus on sustainability,” she said.

The changing face of workplaces has been a hot topic of late, with the question having been asked: “Is it time to rethink the value of office space?”

As more people make a move to regional Australia for affordability and lifestyle reasons, and the trend towards more flexible and remote working patterns, another question that has been pondered is: “Is the 4-day working week the next office space disruptor?”
