Businesses have been formally invited to join the new business precinct set to be established at Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.

To deliver the 24/7 greenfield site, the airport has established a 50/50 joint venture partnership with Charter Hall to deliver the first stage of the precinct.

Turning the first sod today (11 April 2024), Western Sydney International Airport CEO, Simon Hickey, was joined by the federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, as well as Charter Hall’s industrial and logistics CEO, Richard Stacker.

As part of the first stage, 400 jobs are expected to be generated during construction, with 2,000 permanent jobs anticipated once the precinct is fully up and running, according to Hickey.

He believes: “Western Sydney International Airport is the engine room for growth and development across the region that’s attracting billions of dollars of investment and generating thousands of training and job opportunities.

“This is an exciting time for all kinds of businesses to join our new business precinct that’s geared to grow and evolve over time as the airport builds to ultimately become Sydney’s biggest international gateway.”

The first phase of works is due for completion by the end of 2025, at which point Hickey noted there would be “extensive” testing of the airport ahead of the welcoming of passengers and airlines in late 2026.

The CEO also noted that while the precinct will initially serve thousands of workers building the airport and surrounding infrastructure, the precinct will then adapt to meet the evolving needs of airport customers and the local community.

Internal and external roads, connections to arterial roads and landscaping will all be completed as part of the first stage of construction.

Upon that completion, Charter Hall and Western Sydney International Airport detailed that the 20-hectare mixed-use development will include up to 40,000 square metres of modern warehouse space, ancillary offices, and a 150-room hotel to service flight crews.

The area will also be equipped with a service station, convenience food and beverage outlets alongside other retail, a gym and conference facilities.

Hickey said the airport was “pleased to partner with Charter Hall on the delivery of the precinct – their extensive investment and development expertise across the nation will be a vital asset as plans to procure new business customers progress this year”.

For Stacker, “to achieve success in a project of this scale, a true partnership is crucial”.

He acknowledged the significance of having a deep understanding of the importance and impact of the airport, to not only Western Sydney, but to NSW and Australia more broadly.

“We will leverage our cross-sector experience, extensive tenant customer relationships, emphasis on sustainable development and operations, and a shared customer focus to deliver a world-class precinct that sets the benchmark for the rest of this transformative project,” he commented.
