The tower, which will be 45 metres higher than Adelaide’s current tallest tower, is expected to “transform the city’s skyline”.

A 37-storey skyscraper on North Terrace has been granted planning approval from the State Planning Commission, three years after the designs were first revealed.

The tower will be built on the site of the heritage-listed Adelaide Masonic Centre, with the iconic 1927 Freemasons Lodge set to remain. The rear hall will be replaced by a glass link that will connect the old lodge to a 183-metre tower.

The Freemasons stated they are determined to ensure that connection to history and heritage is the “beginning, middle and end” of Keystone Tower.

“We are committed to creating a building that is both a modern marvel and a respectful nod to Adelaide’s heritage for all South Australians,” said lead consultant Michael Baragwanath.

To drive this message home, the developers proposed housing a brand new Adelaide Museum of South Australia’s History (AMoSAH) on the first five floors of the building, including in the historic Freemasons Lodge.

Above the museum, there are plans for a business lounge and pool, wellness centre, observatory, and a 240-room luxury hotel.

If all goes well, it is hoped the building will be completed in 2027 – exactly a century after the historic Freemasons Lodge was first built.

The development has been given a nod of approval from Adelaide City Council, the Environment Department, the Government Architect and Heritage SA, with the developers stating they “are listening to stakeholders to deliver a project that everyone can be proud of”.

Due to the building’s height, the tower proposal is still awaiting approval from the Commonwealth airspace authority, but Adelaide Airport has indicated it has no objection to the development.

“This project promises not only to enhance Adelaide’s urban landscape but also to set a precedent for future developments in terms of pushing the envelope,” said Baragwanath.

“As we look forward to the realisation of this landmark project, we hope that the Keystone Tower development is seen as a shining example of modern urban development done right.”
