While the end of the financial year is a great time to create a plan for the coming year, it’s the new financial year that is the perfect time to communicate and share the plans with your team.
With the anticipation and buzz of the June 30 milestone over, July is the month to reflect on achievements and realign your team to create a platform to execute the new plan as a cohesive team.
Getting people together in one room is critical. Where possible, it’s even more beneficial to do this at a location away from the office. People then have the space to think outside of the ‘day to day’ and are more inclined to interact with others whose paths they normally wouldn’t cross. At Rockend, we call this annual event “Company Day”. Every employee from around Australia and New Zealand congregate in Sydney for a party and then a full day conference. The party is fun but it’s the conference that creates the excitement.
At Company Day, first and foremost, we share the results and achievements of the previous year. We congratulate outstanding work and communicate the plan for the following 12 months. The plan covers all areas of the business and identifies how each teams’ efforts contribute to the overall goals and in turn, the efforts of individuals. By articulating these links, employees understand how their daily work impacts the larger goal. In addition, by making the goals public, we all feel more accountable to each other to ensure they are completed.
The social benefits are significant. Individuals gain as much or more from the new and rekindled connections with colleagues than they do from the presented content. The networking during breaks is complemented with planned activities throughout the day to facilitate interaction. It’s known that the more people know about each other and what role they play in a business, the greater the chance of contacting that person for work purposes. This knowledge sharing and collaboration is what builds efficiencies and improved client outcomes. Ultimately the more friendships people have at work, the more fun it is to come to work every day.
At Rockend, we have seen the positive results from an annual ‘all hands’ company meeting. Whether you’re a large business distributed across a metropolitan area or a small business with one office, there is much benefit from getting everyone together to communicate the plans for the upcoming year. Ultimately, the result is a stronger culture and a more aligned team that’s in the best position to successfully serve your customers.
