Behind every successful team of real estate agents are high-performing assistants and managers. Here’s how this GM is achieving remarkable results.

With more than a decade of experience under her belt, Kollosche’s general manager and REB Women in Real Estate Awards 2020 Supporting Professional of the Year, Renae Hayek, has been involved in “all things HR”, from recruitment, coaching and performance leadership to strategic planning, marketing, financial management and business operations.

In her two years of Kollosche, Ms Hayek has overseen the employment of over 60 people across the business’s residential, new projects, commercial, property management, and marketing and operations teams.

“This creates an agile working environment for me. Each morning I dedicate to meetings with external suppliers, team meetings and one-on-ones with my team members… and each afternoon I dedicate to working on the business and planning,” the general manager shared.

According to Ms Hayek, one of the most important aspects of her job is spending the time to invest in their people “and understand how they are travelling on their career path and progressing with their business plan”.

For the general manager, seeing the accelerated growth of each team and their members is of great satisfaction.

“The biggest highlight of my career and what I enjoy the most is watching our agents double, triple or even quadruple their business in the first year of joining us,” she said.

“Seeing them grow their teams, helping them plan and communicate goals, creating structure for capacity and streamlining processes to enable a greater level of service to our clients is what sends me home happy each evening.

“Coaching our admin staff to develop and move through the business and become successful executive assistants and business managers, too. All these are the highest of highs for me.”

The backbone of a successful business

Ultimately, it’s the business support staff, albeit working behind the scenes, who have as much to do with the success of a business as the frontline staff, if not more, according to Ms Hayek.

While every agent wants a million-dollar business, “they certainly cannot achieve this without a high-performing assistant”, she said.

“Our administrators are the backbone of every single emerging business unit. They manage the admin, marketing and backend processes of every campaign. They allow each of our agents to focus on communication with buyers and sellers and enable a seamless campaign,” the general manager continued.

As a company, Ms Hayek and the rest of Kollosche aim to provide a “six-star experience” for their clients through seamless processes and reliable practices.

However, at the end of the day, she upholds the culture of collaboration and support as a part of her leadership by enabling her team to make independent decisions without fearing failure.

“Failure can sometimes result in the best learning experiences,” according to her.

Her three-point advice for good management are:

  1. Empower your team to make decisions or to come to you with a problem and some possible solutions so you are continually asking them to grow.
  2. Understand each of your team’s goals as they are all motivated individually.
  3. Have clear KPIs and swim lanes so they understand what they need to achieve each year and meet regularly to ensure they are on track and where assistance can be provided.

Finally, “keep learning”, Ms Hayek advised. “There are so many opportunities for development in leadership and strategic planning that can enable a business manager to grow their skill set and be a better leader to their team.”
