A prominent group has handed one of its directors a new role to help grow the business and highlight the virtues of the franchise sector.

RE/MAX Australia has appointed Joel Davoren to the role of franchise director, following the departure of Keith Walker earlier this month.

Mr Davoren has been on the franchise development team for three years and on the board since 2014.

Mr Davoren told REB that one of his goals is to expand the group’s Australian network, which currently numbers 83 offices.

“We’ve already signed up a couple of offices that we’ll be launching next year, so we’ve got a nice head start into 2016, but that doesn’t change what we need to do, which is find more good-quality salespeople and business owners,” he said.

“We’re finding we’re getting a lot of enquiry from NSW, but in saying that we get enquiry from all states. We’re stronger in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, but our focus is on growing everywhere.”

RE/MAX has about 35 new offices in the past two years, including 20 this year, according to Mr Davoren.

Other big franchise groups have also been vocal about their growth plans, but Mr Davoren said there’s enough business out there for everyone.

“We’re not in a race to have the largest number of offices in Australia,” he said.

“Our model is to have larger offices look after regions rather than smaller offices looking after suburbs, which is a model that some of the other franchise groups have been enlisting in the last decade or two.”

Mr Davoren said the real estate franchising sector has been forced to change because some owners have felt they weren’t being given enough support. That has been most evident in Sydney, he added.

“There are hundreds and hundreds of offices down there. Some of them are in franchise groups; a lot of them are now independent,” Mr Davoren said.

“I think that swerve towards independence is because there was a perceived lack of value with some of the franchise offerings. Our emphasis is to focus on helping our business owners grow their businesses.”
