‘Honesty’ helps agent win big

One young and successful agent has found his raw and frank approach to real estate is winning him business – and awards.

Twenty-seven-year-old Shane Sullivan, licensee of LJ Hooker Drummoyne and Concord in Sydney, and a graduate of LJ Hooker’s Future Captains Program – a course that provides the framework for a career pathway in real estate – was recently crowned Domain’s Rising Star for NSW.

Speaking to REB, Mr Sullivan said his back-to-basics conversational approach to real estate, with a digital twist, is a large part of why he is attracting business from clients and attention from the industry.

“I wanted to really differentiate myself from my competitors so I came up with an interview style of video where someone will interview me about my listing and I interview someone about theirs,” Mr Sullivan told REB.

“We talk about the main features and benefits of a property and why people would consider buying our property as opposed to a competitor’s property,” he said.

Mr Sullivan said this departure from the usual walk-through style of property video is significantly more engaging, authentic, and allows buyers to become familiar with the agent.

“We have a very honest and frank conversation on camera. We don’t rehearse it, we don’t have lines, it’s just off the cuff – really honest and raw opinions and comments about a particular home,” Mr Sullivan said.

“When they get to the open house, they already have an idea of who I am and how I conduct my business, so then they’re more open to having a conversation with me,” he added.

According to Mr Sullivan, these videos have resulted in more views and traffic to individual listings.

Being part of LJ Hooker’s Future Captains program also “helped immensely” in his winning the award since the program provided him with a good foundation in the industry.

“It does mean a lot to win,” Mr Sullivan said. “At a young age, the industry can knock you around a bit and it’s quite competitive, so it’s good to know that you’re on the right track.”
