A toned body isn’t the only benefit of regular workouts. These leading agents all use the gym to build resilience and keep on winning after losing a listing.

Ever struggled to maintain a positive mindset after hitting a brick wall?

Resilience is a quality of all successful people, from the sporting field to the boardroom. The ability to bounce back is what sets them apart from the rest.

At this year’s AREC event on the Gold Coast, real estate mogul John McGrath asked Top 100 agent Sam Guo how he maintains a positive attitude after losing a listing.

“It doesn’t matter how good you are, you can’t win all the time,” Mr Guo said.

“Personally, I play a lot of sports and go to the gym about four times a week. The reason I do that is because I want to maintain a balance between my business and my life. You lose and you win,” he said.

The Ray White Broadbeach agent loves his tennis, and recalls something Serena Williams said about being a champion: “She said, ‘What makes a champion is someone who can fall but bounce back really quickly, and become a better player as a result’”.

“Of course I lose listings, and it can be frustrating. But Julia [Kuo] and I are a good team and we complement each other. With each listing we lose we sit down and identify what went wrong. Then we come up with a new formula of what to do differently next time.”

Mr Guo is not alone in making physical fitness his weapon of choice for running a successful business.

William Phillips of BresicWhitney says he’s in the gym at 5.30 every morning, training with his brother, Alexander, the number one agent in the country.

“We’re both really competitive, so training together keeps us accountable and we push each other. A lot of the guys from BresicWhitney and the industry train at my gym so there is a great energy there."

Meanwhile, Top 100 agent Zali Reynolds is up at 5am and in the gym by six.

“I arrive at the gym and train for an hour. I go to a gym that is quite a distance from my office because I have the best PT. He’s a big part of keeping me motivated every day and getting me on track,” she said.

A recent REB poll found that 33 per cent of agents hit the gym three times a week, while 15 per cent exercise on a daily basis.
