Majority of pools unsafe

Only four per cent of pools in Australia are maintained properly during the cooler months, causing the vast majority to become breeding grounds for bacteria and bugs, according to a study by PoolWerx.

"Our water testing showed just how badly people let their pools slide with some pools being ignored for up to four months," said John O'Brien from PoolWerx.

"Your pool may look clean but if you haven't maintained it over the past few months there could be few 'bugs' waiting to break out.”

Stewart Bunn, national communications manager for First National Real Estate, claimed pools could become a serious health risk if not properly maintained by tenants.

“Untreated pools can cause real harm to family and friends, with the increased levels of microorganisms, algae and bacteria posing serious health risks like diarrhoea, ear infections and eye and skin irritations,” Mr Bunn said in a recent blog.

“Pool owners, including tenants leasing properties with pools, should take the time now to check their pools so that they can enjoy them safely throughout the warm summer months.”

“Expert services are far more affordable than it would be to seek help once the water has turned ‘green’ from flourishing bacteria,” Mr Bunn added.

Mr Bunn gave his top five tips for pool maintenance for tenants.

“Check the pool equipment to ensure it is in property running order. Ensure the pH level is within healthy levels. Make sure chlorine levels are adequate to disinfect all microorganisms. Vacuum and skim the pool regularly.

“And organise a regular professional check-up.”

Recent changes to legislation regarding pools should also be checked, Mr Bunn said.

The Swimming Pools Amendment Act 2012 was passed by both houses of NSW parliament late last year, which requires all owners of pools to register with their local council.

It will also be required that a valid certificate of compliance be provided to residential tenants.

These provisions come into force in NSW on 23 April 2014.
