One creative tenant has used a ukulele, harmonica, rhyming lyrics and YouTube to secure a three-bedroom home in competitive inner-city Melbourne.
The property in Fitzroy North attracted at least 25 groups to the first inspection according to Rob Saro the leasing executive at RUN Property Carlton.
“It was well priced at $580 a week and was in a good location,” Mr Saro told Residential Property Manager.
“It’s a competitive market and it takes a lot to stand out from all of the other applications, but I’ve never seen anything like this before.”
The tenant, Darcy, decided the best way to woo his property manager was through song, posting an amateur video to YouTube.
Mr Saro said all he could do was laugh when he first viewed the YouTube video that included lines; "I’ve made this song because I don’t have much to do, I’ve already tidied the house and paid the rent…quickly."
“Darcy emailed me and said 'I was going to send you a cover letter but I thought this might be better',” Mr Saro explained.
But it wasn’t just a case of writing a song and winning a rental property Mr Saro assures.
“The video showed a bit about his character and his passion for music,” he said.
“It also showed he has a good sense of humour, is easy going and probably someone that I would enjoy dealing with, which is important in a tenant-property manager relationship.
“And, on top of all of that, all of his references checked out to be great.”
Darcy and two housemates moved into the property in late February and according to Mr Saro they have been perfect tenants.
“They were ecstatic when I told them they had got the property,” he said.
“Our whole office even applauded them when they came in to sign the lease; it was a really great atmosphere in the office.”
Mr Saro now would encourage other tenants to think outside the box when it comes to rental applications.
“Look, it’s definitely an avenue to explore, it shows that human aspect and brings an application to life,” he said.
“Words on paper can only do so much.”
