Sinister acts, scams and identity fraud are at the forefront of property managers' minds, according to managing director of the Bob Walters Team (BWT), Bob Walters.
The Leading Property Managers of Australia (LPMA) 2013 conference will diverge from previous years by focusing on protecting businesses, BWT's Bob Walters has said.
“For the first time ever we have what you would regard as quite a scary topic,” he told Residential Property Manager. “Often in the past, in conferences, we’ve focused on growth and profitability extensively.
“This year we’re also adding in how to actually protect your business because certainly there are some pretty sinister things going on in the market with identity fraud and all sorts of scams.”
Addressing this issue is Detective Senior Constable Robert Martin from the Major Fraud Squad.
He will run a session on how businesses can protect themselves against various situations that could occur.
Mr Walters said with the increase in technology, there were more incidences of cyber crime.
“An example I had in my own business recently was when one of our rental properties was advertised on the real estate portal site and all of the information on it was scraped off the portal site and put onto another property-related site, with different contact information on it and with someone who was trying to rent out the property," he said.
He added that in Western Australia there had been large incidences of identity theft and property-related crime.
LPMA 2013 will be held at Jupiter’s Hotel and Casino on the Gold Coast on April 18 and 19.
