A young Darwin family want to live in a property rent free, on the condition that they renovate the abandoned house.

According to NT News, the Alawa home has been used by teenagers to host out-of-control parties.

Twenty three year-old Steven Cumner told NT News that he has a solution - he wants to live in the Alawa Crescent home so his partner Emma McCrone, 19, and their four month-old daughter have a roof over their heads.

"Let us move in and we will start working on it straight away," he told the newspaper.

He said once the house had been renovated, he would negotiate with the owner about paying rent.

Mr Cumner claims his family had to leave their present home the next day and needed a roof over their heads.

One of the neighbours of the abandoned property, Nick Westley said something needed to be done after 15 teens jumped the fence and stormed through his garden.

The teenagers had been partying in the house.

It is unknown who owns the property.
