Fair Trading NSW has warned property managers to be extra vigilant when renting holiday accommodation over the winter school holiday break.
According to NSW Fair Trading commissioner Rod Stowe, there are many hazards in a rental property that consumers, landlords and property managers should be aware of.
“Keep furniture and other climbing objects away from windows and balconies," he said.
“Don’t rely on fly screens to keep children in. Lock doors and windows when balconies are not in use. Pay attention to balcony rails and fences and keep children away from edges.
“Don’t put furniture and pot plants near windows and balcony edges because children can climb and stand on them.
“Don’t leave cords from curtains or blinds hanging! Use safety devices to keep the cords out of the reach of children. Make loose cords safe. Contact the real estate agent or landlord if you have any safety concerns about holiday accommodation.”
These comments come just months after the Queensland Office of Fair Trading (OFT) announced property managers and landlords will now face fines of up to $200,000 if they do not comply with new mandatory safety standards for bunk beds. The move was introduced to increase the safety standards in short-term rental accommodation.
