A failure to have a career plan is a reason why property managers end up unhappy with their jobs, according to a property management recruitment consultant.
Speaking at the Wealth Conference on the Gold Coast on Monday national manager of Design & Build Recruitment Clare Verrall told property managers to invest in their careers and develop the skills they wanted and needed.
She told Residential Property Manager establishing a career plan was not taken seriously by some property managers who were just floating through their careers.
“I asked the room, ‘Who here has written a five to 10 year career plan and not a single person put up their hand’ which was a bit disconcerting,” she said.
“I think that people haven’t put much thought into planning their career in property management. They fall into it and then they bumble along and then get sick of it and then leave.
Ms Verrall spent her presentation providing tips on how property managers could create a clear career path in property management.
“Work out what your strengths and weaknesses are and then work out which direction you want to go in whether that be department head, business development manager or even business head.
“If your strengths are listing property and you are really motivated by money maybe department head is not what you should be aiming for, maybe business development is.”
She added: “Think of property management as a career, not a job.”
