‘Admin got me to where I am today’: award-winning PM

An award-winning property manager with less than one year under her belt believes property managers with an administration background have more longevity in the business.

Speaking with Residential Property Manager, Ny-re Fardella from First National Busselton recently won an award for Property Manager Rookie of the Year at the First National General Excellence and Marketing Awards in Western Australia.

“I’ve worked in this role for less than a year. Initially I was only called up after a colleague went on maternity leave, but I’ve really hit my stride in the new role,” she said.

After working for two years in the administration section of the office, Ms Fardella believes it’s vital for new property managers to acquaint themselves with the environment first.

“It definitely helped me, I don’t know how I would have coped otherwise," she said.

“It’s good on two levels. It gave me exposure to the systems and processes of the office and its culture. An agency is a pretty busy place to work in, so with that background I knew what I was getting myself into.

“But also it helped me prepare to become a better property manager. The biggest challenge for me when I first started was time management, and that’s something that I really learnt behind the front desk.

“Of course, moving into this role was a massive step up in terms of workload, but at least I had started to develop those skills.”

But Ms Fardella’s top tip for new property managers is to prepare themselves for a shock.

“Don’t take things personally would be my advice. It can get pretty rough when you’ve got angry, screaming clients, but you just need to make sure you don’t take anything personally," she said.

“When it happens, move their situation to a number one priority – tell them you’ve done that – and get the issue sorted as fast as you can.”
