Tradies rely on word of mouth

A study has highlighted the importance of referral partnerships with tradies, as consumers rely on word-of-mouth referrals.

According to the latest NSW Fair Trading Licensing Research Community Survey Report by consulting firm Instinct and Reason, 44 per cent of respondents named word of mouth as the best source of information used by homeowners to find a tradesperson.

While the results didn’t surprise CEO of Tradebusters Laorence Nohra, she said the survey proves the importance of relationships between tradies and property service providers.

“Tradebusters was established to help alleviate the time, guesswork and risk associated with sourcing tradespeople," she said.

“We are now servicing a number of leading customer loyalty and employee benefits programs as well as real estate agencies, which reflects the personal preference of most homeowners and businesses to use service providers with established relationships with tradespeople.”

The survey further shows word-of-mouth referral sources are even more preferred for planned home improvements versus unplanned repair.

The report also discovered that whilst licensing is featured as one of the most important characteristics of a tradesperson, only 54 per cent of people know that it is illegal for a tradesperson to conduct work without a licence.

The findings of this research will be used towards education of consumers to bring greater awareness of licensing requirements and the benefits of engaging licensed tradespeople.
