One of the leading minds in property management is addressing the bigger picture at an upcoming industry event, saying principals and property managers can be prone to taking a "blinkered" view of their businesses.

Speaking to Residential Property Manager, Blayney Potential Plus managing director Fiona Blayney said the upcoming Australasian Residential Property Management (ARPM) conference will motivate property managers to look past “what the guy in the next street is doing”.

“The people that come to ARPM are top tier, so you are really able to test your thinking and come back into your office and apply that in your own business sense,” she said.

“We don’t want people hearing about what the guy next door is doing really well; we actually want them hearing about what is happening in the world really well,” she added.

The ARPM event will be held at the Hilton in Sydney from 3-4 August this year, with already over 500 people set to attend.

Ms Blayney, who has been a speaker at the ARPM conference for the past 11 years, said the theme for this year is “reactivate”.

“The concept being reactivate you, reactivate your business, reactivate your processes, reactivate your service levels, reactivate your whole thinking and leadership concepts,” she explained.

“It is not really meant to be nuts and bolts property management - If you want to learn legislation or you want to learn how to do a condition report, then this isn’t the event to come to.”

Ms Blayney said the programme has been expanded this year to include “power-up” sessions, which involve 15-20 minutes of “rapid-fire” tips.

“The reason [we have expanded] is because you can have people who have got really great content and are doing awesome things in their office but are not great speakers,” she said.

“It will be the ability to showcase really great, innovative ideas that are actually being used right now, without it being a long, drawn-out session.”
