Tenancy complaints on the rise

For the first time ever, tenancy grievances have made the top 10 list of consumer complaints, according to new data from NSW Fair Trading.

Of the 45,108 complaints received by NSW Fair Trading in the 2013/2014 financial year, 1,522 of those came from tenancy issues such as rent, condition reports and inspections. The category came in at number six on the overall list.

“It’s encouraging to see tenants are seeking advice from the consumer watchdog to mediate disagreements with their landlord and real estate agent,” said NSW Fair Trading Minister Matthew Mason-Cox.

The top 10 list was revealed after NSW Fair Trading introduced a new online tenancy complaint service in December 2013 that offered tenants the ability to have grievances arbitrated online for common disputes such as rent increases, repairs, access to premises or inspections, condition reports and ending a tenancy.

Previously, most tenancy complaint issues ended up in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The number one category on the top 10 list was electrical, electronic, white goods and gas appliances, with 2,537 complaints received.

Used cars, household furniture, clothing and accessories, and house construction rounded out the top five categories for consumer complaints.

Most complaints were linked with goods failing to work or lack of after-sales service.
