More in-house training, and a greater focus on risk management and rewards, are some of the hopes PMs are holding close this New Year.
Besser & Co head of property management Marcel Dybner believes 2015 is going to be a great year for some agencies and “very bad” for others. He told Residential Property Manager that training and technology will be at the top of the agenda in his St Kilda East office.
“We’re always looking at ways to improve our processes and win market share in our area, so we’ll be focusing heavily on technology and training in 2015 to help us continue to grow and compete with the established 'big' agents in our area,” he said.
“As an industry, we still have a very long way to go. We have some amazing talent in this country, but I find that the real issue is the lack of training. Most companies are happy to send their staff to a training seminar instead of offering any in-house training.”
Metro Property Management director Leah Calnan told RPM her hope for 2015 is for PMs to remember the rewards the industry can offer.
“It’s an amazing, rewarding, yet challenging career. Just find the right company and boss – the money will follow,” she said. “In 2015, I would like the movement of acknowledging property management as a career to continue. I want to hear the industry say: 'I am a property manager and I love my job!'”
Leading Property Managers of Australia director Darren Hunter said he would like to see more focus on the back-end of the business – as opposed to just bringing in new business.
“More focus is needed on the implementation and following of check lists and procedures, better staffing structure, better resourcing and training,” he told RPM.
“Further, more focus is needed on risk management, removing 'risk' properties/owners and reducing their litigation exposure.
“Quality property managers in 2015 will be more focussed on working for a business owner that cares and shares the same values they have towards the importance of property management in the overall business,” he added.
BDM Academy director Tara Bradbury said we all find it very hard to be content with where we are in our careers and where we are amongst our competitors.
“I personally take the time to read, listen along and watch amazing leaders in the industry each and every day,” she said. “Each year, one of my key goals is to connect with the best of the best in the industry, and it is generally a small piece of advice that you least expect which takes you to the next level.
“As long as you are open to embracing change, you will keep up with those who are highly successful players in our amazing industry.”
