Only four months after its official launch, a smartphone app has proven “extremely popular” with tenants in one state, with over 4,000 downloading it so far.
Consumer Protection’s iRentWA smartphone app has been downloaded by 4,175 iPhone and Android users, giving them essential information on tenancy laws and handy tools to help them manage their tenancy.
Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll said she is confident the app will help reduce the number of disputes related to the return of the security bond at the end of a tenancy.
“The app allows tenants to take and store photos of the property before moving in and provides an accurate record of the condition of the property at the beginning of a tenancy, Ms Driscoll said. “These can be compared to photos taken at the end of the tenancy to help minimise any disagreements between the tenant and landlord.
“The app also synchronises with the phone’s calendar, setting reminders for paying rent, routine inspections, rent increases and giving proper notice before moving out. The tenant will be alerted if any of the notice periods are not in accordance with tenancy laws,” she added.
Ms Driscoll said useful information about tenants' rights and obligations are now at their fingertips.
“They can quickly find out about rent increases, getting their bond back or what to do with a breach notice, as well as many other tenancy issues that may arise,” she said.
Ms Driscoll added that property managers and landlords can also benefit from the app, which outlines tenancy laws applicable to them.
