A man has been charged by police for allegedly setting fire to his rental unit and racking up an estimated damage bill of $60,000.
According to the NSW Police Force, the tenant allegedly set fire to items in the Sydney unit at about 11pm last Friday night. He fled the scene on foot.
Emergency services were then called to the unit complex, located in the suburb of Ermington.
Police said one of the units was well alight, and residents were evacuated from the building while Fire & Rescue NSW personnel extinguished the blaze.
No-one was reported injured in the fire.
Following inquiries by police from Rosehill Local Area Command, a 44 year-old man presented at Granville Police Station over the weekend.
The man has been charged with damaging property by fire. He was refused bail and appeared before Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.
The fire caused damage worth an estimated $60,000.
