Only five out of the 50 suburbs with the most expensive rents were outside Sydney
Statistics provided by CoreLogic RP Data for April 2015 show Sydney’s continued domination in the prestige rental market as the New South Wales capital recorded 45 of the 50 most expensive rental suburbs.
The suburb of Tamarama in Sydney took out top spot with a median weekly rent of $2,650.
It was a 47 per cent jump from the $1,800 rental price tag recorded in April 2014.
Also in Sydney, the suburbs of Dover Heights and Dawes Point recorded a median weekly rent of $2,200.
This was a 19 per cent jump from $1,850 April 2014 for Dover Heights. No earlier data was available for Dawes Point.
Perth was the only other capital city to make an appearance in the top 10, with the suburb of Peppermint Grove recording an average median rent of $1,925 – a 28 per cent increase from the $1,500 recorded last year.
The suburb of Bellevue Hill recorded a median weekly rent of $1,725, which was a 3 per cent decrease from $1,775 last year.
Vaucluse and Watsons Bay recorded a median weekly rent of $1,700 – a 6 per cent decrease from $1,800 for Vaucluse, while no data was available for Watsons Bay.
McMahons Point in Sydney was next with a median weekly rent of $1,650, up a massive 106 per cent from $800 last year.
Mosman and Double Bay both recorded a median weekly rent of $1,600.
This was a 7 per cent rise for Mosman from the $1,500 recorded last March and a 9 per cent drop from $1,750 for Double Bay.
For the other suburbs outside Sydney that made the top 50 list, the suburb of O’Malley in Canberra was next at number 37, recording a $1,200 median weekly rent for April.
Toorak in Melbourne was at number 38, recording a median weekly rent of $1,195.
Forrest in Canberra was next at number 42, with a median weekly rent of $1,173.
Bayview in Darwin came in at number 48, posting a median weekly rent of $1,100 in April this year.
