A PM business is using daily meditation sessions to promote a calmer workplace and secure more listings.
Rentwest has introduced meditation sessions for staff to help reduce stress and lift performance in the Perth market and is seeing some clear-cut results from the new-age initiative.
Director Suzanne Brown told Residential Property Manager that she had some personal experience with meditation before introducing it to her staff in February this year.
Ms Brown said there was some initial resistance among staff, but that they quickly realised the benefits.
With high vacancy rates in the Perth market, Rentwest began February with a goal of renting 48 properties for the month.
Following the meditation session the company was able to exceed that target with 62 properties leased. Ms Brown said she saw a clear correlation between the mediation and the strong result.
Another key benefit Rentwest has seen is an improvement in productivity.
“People are more focused since, when you come out of a meditation session, your mind is very clear, and so for the next hour or two is when I’m most productive in the day,” Ms Brown said.
“It also gives us a lot more empathetic view on things, so it helps with negotiation; if you’re in a calm state of mind, you’re more able to negotiate through a problem calmly without reacting to someone who’s maybe yelling at you.”
Ms Brown added that the PM industry can be a stressful at times, especially when dealing with people’s emotions daily.
Keeping calm equips PMs better to handle those emotions, she said.
