Man leaving through door

While some property managers were set to join the industry from a young age, many others fell into the position unexpectedly.

After asking how and why you became a property manager, we received some great and varied responses. (See below)

A few of you heard the calling for property management during childhood, while others came from a sales background and eventually saw the light.

A couple of you started as receptionists before stepping into the property management game.

There were also a few cases of starting in hospitality before making the shift into property management.

Most of you were gently nudged into the industry by friends, family or great bosses.

“As a child, my father seriously worried about my prospects in life. A highly successful Bendigo businessman said to him one day, ‘You need not worry; I have seen him play’. I was organising other children to do tasks building huts, cubbies, paths, and play areas on vacant land – I was allocating jobs. I was managing property as a 10-year-old child.” – Hunter Gill

"Whilst doing another role my friend was a property manager at the time and I helped her for a couple of days and realised that property management looked like a very interesting and rewarding career, the rest I guess you say is history." - Adriana Verdino

"I was 22 years old selling real estate in a town where the sales market slumped. My boss said to me there is a job for you in rentals or we will have to let you go. Rentals sounds like a great idea. Twenty-two years later I am still in real estate and still in property management." - Jamie Stephens

“Two years of sales and leasing work, I was ready to leave the industry! Fortunately I was lucky enough that the principal of my dream company decided to take a chance and drop inexperienced me straight into a full property management role!” – Tomas Rivera

"I bought a house and the sales manger of the company offered me a receptionist/property management assistant position. That was 40 years ago and I have never been out of work since." - Elaine Danson

"When I was in grade 5 I wrote an essay saying when I grow up I want to work in real estate and live in a big house and drive a big car." - Metta Gorwayhayes

“This is what I call my second working life as I was in marketing before taking maternity leave. I ended up going back to uni and was doing a double arts/law degree and took a part time job in a suburban agency to help pay the bills.” – Maureen Barker Greene

"I worked at a resort on work experience and they told me about a job going at a real estate office. I was quite young and didn't even know what the job was! I was offered the receptionist position and as soon as I got my registration I was offered an assistant PM role at another agency! Seven years later and I still have that senior PM's voice in my head when I do an entry condition report." - Stefanie Regan

"Seven years ago I was looking for a role with variety because I was sick of being sat at a desk all day wishing away the hours. Luckily the recruitment agent put me forward for a trainee position and I found it worked well for me. I just love to help people, it's so rewarding." - Victoria O'Dell
