In the barren desert of Joshua Tree, California is a house that is difficult to see and even harder to believe.
With construction taking five years to complete, this amalgamation of concrete, steel and glass blends into the rocky hillside of the Mojave Desert (see below) and sold last year for US$3 million.
Featuring heavy walls and a rib-like structure, this desert home serves as a robust shelter against desert storms and even withstood an earthquake in 1992.

The building has 26 columns that fan out of its rooflines like wings and was built as homage to the Native American housing that was once scattered across the southwest United States.
