Pepsi has partnered with a charity to turn empty plastic bottles into building blocks for a school in the Philippines.
MyShelter Foundation is aiming to solve the classroom shortage in the Philippines with sustainable, eco-friendly, low-cost and disaster-resistant structures, according to Inter Press Service.
The solution is to recycle about 5,000 plastic bottles, fill them with a mixture of soil, water and cement and turn them into construction material (see below).
The bottles can apparently withstand storms and earthquakes that would crack traditional hollow bricks.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average plastic beverage bottle takes 450 years to decompose, so using them as building materials addresses social and environmental issues that many nations face.
One wall of the school even uses glass bottles, allowing for natural lighting and ventilation.
