Agencies have been urged to emphasise real-world skills such as time management and wealth creation when teaching new staff the art of property management.
Harcourts head of academy Irene Green said the way agencies train their property managers and agents should prepare students for the real world.
“It’s not just about equipping students with the knowledge they need, but also giving them the confidence and the ability to perform out in the world,” she said.
Ms Green said agencies should give property managers and other staff training in practical skills such as business planning, time management, personal leadership skills and wealth creation.
Staff should be encouraged to keep learning as their career progresses, while special training courses should be designed for employees with more experience, according to Ms Green.
“I also believe that our industry can benefit from openly sharing best practice with others,” she said.
“The way I see it, sharing knowledge with our peers in the real estate industry can only lift the calibre of real estate agents in Australia, which is a great outcome for everybody.”
Ms Green said property managers can enhance their skills by participating in industry events, offering to speak on panels and publishing blogs in industry publications.
Industry training standards returned to the news last month when a national survey revealed that an overwhelming majority of professionals want better training and standardised licensing.
