A penny-pinching student has found a clever way to save on rent: commute from Poland.
University student Jonathan Davey makes a weekly commute of 1,600 kilometres from his hostel in Gdańsk to the University of London.
Mr Davey told the Mirror that renting a room near his university would cost him £220 ($480) a week while pre-booked return flights, airport transport and rent in Poland costs him just £2,100 ($4,584) a year.
“It's hard to believe it’s cheaper to commute 1,000 miles than live just round the corner,” he said.
“But the cost of living for students is crippling. I’m thousands of pounds a year better off living in Poland.”
According to Mr Davey, he flies to London each Wednesday for lectures on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, during which time he sleeps at cheap London hostels or on friends’ sofas.
When in Gdańsk, Mr Davey stays at a hostel with tourists and backpackers that costs him only £35 ($76) a week.
