Spare a thought for this unfortunate tenant, whose landlord just severely hiked his rent up out of nowhere.
Neil Hutchinson, who rents an apartment in North Beach, San Francisco, was recently told his rent was going up from $US1,800 to $US8,000 ($2,400 to $10,800) per month, according to Metro.
Mr Hutchinson said he has lived in the property for a long time, consistently pays his rent on time and has since appealed to the San Francisco Rent Board, which will make a decision in early August.
However, the board’s ruling may come too late, since the landlord has issued Mr Hutchinson an eviction notice, giving him until 21 July to vacate the premises.
“I could be evicted before that decision comes through, so I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m struggling here,” Mr Hutchinson said.
Scott Weaver from the San Francisco Tenants Union has fought a lot of rent increases, and said there has never been one this large in the area.
