Are you working too hard?

Every property manager has stories of working endless hours, doing overtime and going above and beyond for their clients and their agency. But what should the cut-off be to preserve work-life balance?

Alexander Laureti, of accounting firm LMS Advisory, says he works approximately 60 to 80 hours per week, and believes there is no such thing as “working too much”.

“To be honest, I don’t keep track of it,” he told the My Business Podcast.

“The day that I come back home and I say, ‘I’ve worked too many hours this week’, then the passion might be dying in the business that you’re working on.

“I’ve had conversations with friends saying, ‘You work too much. You need to relax a little bit more’. It’s not something that I’ve ever questioned or said, ‘I feel like I’m working too much’.”

Mr Laureti said he is driven to service his clients and improve the client experience.

“I’m building something that helps a lot of people, helps myself, for my family and everybody else,” he said.

 

Mr Laureti said the internet and the ability to receive and reply to work-related emails at any time means “you’re always on call, you’re always available”.

“Technically, we’re always working,” he said.

“It’s trying to find that balance between saying, ‘Now I’m working, but now we need to find that balance and mix a bit of home life in there as well’.”

Despite working up to 80 hours a week, Mr Laureti believes he has achieved a good work-life balance.

“At the moment, I feel like I’ve built a really good business that I can take that time whenever I need to, to be able to spend time at home. By the same token, be able to dedicate as many hours that I need to, to continue growing that business where I want it to go.”
