Mark Kentwell, founding director of PRDnationwide Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, knows the importance of diary management in building a successful career.
The number one regional agent in REB’s Top 100 Agents ranking spoke with RPM about work-life balance and how to ensure you get the most out of your day.
“I think agents make mistakes in what they’re going to do each day by letting the day just happen,” Mr Kentwell said.
“They might have two or three key activities in that day that are really productive and they think, 'If I just achieve those two things in the day I’ve had a great day',” he said.
PMs can avoid falling into this trap by planning everything in advance and setting up their diaries to ensure essential tasks are done before anything can get in the way. This includes booking in holidays and personal development time.
“Schedule in the key things, and I like scheduling them in early. So fitness for me is important, it’s an everyday thing, so I do it in the mornings so that if I have a late night at work or I end up flat out in the afternoon or I’m burnt out or whatever, I don’t have to then try and negotiate going to the gym or possibly miss it,” said Mr Kentwell.
Mr Kentwell and his staff take this same approach to holidays, preferring to book them well in advance to avoid missing quality recharge time.
“When we plan each year, I’m not just interested in what commission they’re going to raise, I’m interested in when we’re booking their holidays in. We like to have four breaks a year if at all possible: two little ones, what I call a recharge, and two big knockout ones.
“We like to sit down with our guys and plan that at the start. I encourage them to go all the way with their holidays because they’ll pay for them anyway with the increased figures they do,” said Mr Kentwell.
