One leading network has hosted a three-day leadership academy for its top stakeholders in Sydney, designed to upskill them in the discipline of organisational behaviour and have them learn from one of the world’s most accomplished behavioural academics.
The Ray White Group has been running the sessions for three years, and this year, the summit was led by Professor Boris Groysberg of the Harvard Business School. Prof Groysberg is a renowned academic and author of Chasing Stars: The Myth of Talent and the Portability of Performance.
He is a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review on how firms hire, engage, develop, retain and communicate with their talented employees.
Prof Groysberg said that the participants at the academy stimulated a lot of robust discussion.
“A lot of the conversations we had were ‘how can we get the best out of the people who work for us?'” he said.
“A significant part of leadership is asking if you are creating a multiplier effect.”
Ray White Group chairman Brian White said that there was a big difference between leadership and management.
“Ambition is very much tied in to leadership,” the professor said.
“But the difference between being a leader and a manager is as broad as the ocean. A manager has a job to do, but a leader sees the potential of what impact she or he can have.”
Mr White said that there is always something new to learn in the pursuit of excellence.
“Boris’ sessions with our leadership team have instilled a sense of confidence that our leaders can achieve more than they ever thought was possible,” Mr White said.
“A key takeout from these sessions was the increased confidence that I can have a greater impact that I ever really thought was going to be my potential.”
He said that the concept of constant improvement holds true as much for leadership as it does for any life skill.
