Every night across Australia, there are more than 44,000 young people who are homeless. To tackle this issue, property professionals joined the Property Industry Foundation (PIF) and major sponsor Secure Parking on the 5th Melbourne Corporate Charity Cycling Day to raise over $80,000 to support at-risk and homeless young people.
Victorian chairman of the Property Industry Foundation Daryl Browning said that these “crucial” funds will help thousands of young Victorians rebuild their lives.
“These funds will be distributed to our beneficiary charities — Chatterbox Bus, an outreach service, and PIF Housing Program, with industry members of PIF constructing these homes,” Mr Browning said.
The Charity Cycling Day was held earlier in the month. More than 130 riders from the property industry rode either 75km or 50km through the Yarra Valley.
Dutch Tour de France rider Koen de Kort, who is passionate about tackling the issues of youth homelessness, was the PIF Event Ambassador and led the Charity Cycling Day.
Mr De Kort said that most young people experiencing homelessness are hidden from view and that they are not homeless by choice.
“So along with PIF and the other riders, I’m determined to raise awareness for these young people and help to give them a way out of their situation and into a new future.”
The charity riders were also joined by three-time national cyclocross champion Lisa Jacobs.
PIF partners with its charity beneficiaries and the property industry to build homes to reduce youth homelessness. Over the last five years, it has invested $6.5 million into various programs.
