The proceeds of an apartment in Randwick that sold for $205,000 over the reserve at an auction facilitated by Di Jones in March have been given to St Vincent’s Hospital.

The previous owner, Donald Stone, left the property to the hospital in his will after having lived on the property for years beforehand.

A spokesperson for St Vincent’s Hospital said that Mr Stone had no family and they were honoured that he chose to leave his estate to the hospital.

“Don never married or had any family and made the very worthy decision that his estate would be used to help improve the lives of others after he passed. A man in his early 80s, he left his entire estate, including the three-bedroom apartment in Randwick, to St Vincent’s Hospital,” the management said.

St Vincent’s said that Don had a vision for the future and the hospital was determined to let his love for creating live on.

“Working for many years as an engineer for the NCR, Donald’s passion for building and understanding the intricacies of how things work appeared in all aspects of his life. Don’s love of engineering will live on, with the funds from the sale of the apartment being used to purchase state-of-the-art technology and equipment to treat patients for generations to come,” the spokesperson said.

Di Jones Real Estate handled the auction, with sales agents Samuel and Jane Schumann saying that the apartment attracted a lot of local attention.

“The apartment’s sunny north-west aspect and leafy district views saw solid interest, with three double bedrooms, spacious living/dining area which opened to the balcony of considerable appeal,” Ms Schumann said.

“We had a great response to the property with six contracts issued and four registered bidders on the night, with local buyers from Coogee ultimately successful in securing the home.”

The three-bedroom apartment auctioned for $1.405 million, some $205,000 over the reserve.

Di Jones will also donate the commission for the sale of the property to St Vincent’s Hospital.
