A history-making, all-female finale is set to be on the cards for an auctioneering competition, according to the hosts of the event.
The Real Estate Institute of New South Wales Novice Auctioneers Competition is an annual event open to entrants aged over 16 who have not yet completed more than six auctions in the past year.
REINSW president Leanne Pilkington said that the first three heats had been won by women and it was an exciting time to see the nature of auctioneering change.
“Once a male-dominated role in the profession, the dynamic and theatrical nature of auctioneering is seeing the rise of women auctioneers,” the president said.
Ms Pilkington said that this competition had six heats and there was a strong possibility that a female competitor could take out the title.
“This year’s competition sees 21 novice auctioneers currently registered to take part in six heats with 11 female competitors,” Ms Pilkington said.
The current heats have been won by a wide variety of women, all based in Sydney.
Former investment banker Joanne Dai won the first heat, and the second heat was won by Karen Harvey who only recently completed a master’s degree in business.
The Castle Hill heat was won by real estate trainer Lisa Liberatore.
The fourth heat will be held in Wollongong, followed by Sydney’s Inner West and then Newcastle at the end of the month.
The final three heats are still open for registration and potential auctioneers must not have held eight auctions in their career and no more than six months as livestock or chattel auctioneer.
All proceeds from the heats and finale are donated to the suicide prevention awareness charity, R U OK.
The competition finale will be held on 28 June in Sydney.
