In a bid to bring humanity back to real estate, a Brisbane-based boutique agency has written 11 “human” commandments in a manifesto it aims to live and work by.

Titled “More Human”, the new manifesto was a conscious effort by Brisbane’s Hutton & Hutton to try and bring honesty, humanity and kindness back into the real estate industry.

The agency’s CEO, Peter Hutton, said the manifesto was created to remind people what the business truly stands for.

“When I started this agency, I thought of myself as going into the business of people, not so much the business of real estate,” he remarked.

“So, whenever I see articles claiming real estate agents are one of Australia’s least trusted professions, it honestly breaks my heart.”

Including phrases like “Let’s tell the truth”, “Let’s stop counting money, and count happy clients instead”, and “Let’s not take ourselves too seriously. We’re real estate agents, not brain surgeons”, the manifesto has reportedly received support inside the business and from the community at large.

Mr Hutton said, too often, he sees people “treated as numbers and they’re seen as potential sales rather than human beings”.

“My business is about people’s happiness, so I wanted to create something that reminded everyone why we’re really here.”

With 11 separate aims, and an overarching mission of “Let’s Be More Human”, the manifesto has been “completely” embraced by the Hutton & Hutton team.

For Jarrod Perry, a principal agent at Hutton & Hutton Inner East, the manifesto is “a breath of fresh air” in an industry too focused on the numbers.

“In my day-to-day, I value honesty and integrity,” he said.

“It’s just how I’ve always worked and I know each and every person on my team holds the same values; after all, that’s why they work with me!”

The introduction of the manifesto, according to Mr Perry, “was like a visual confirmation that what we’re doing here is not only so different from major agencies, but it’s the right thing to do”.

“We’re just human beings helping other human beings,” Mr Perry said.
