More than 1,800 homes in capital cities across Australia will go under the hammer this week, down from 2,139 this time last year.

Auctioneers will be busiest in Melbourne, where it is expected 854 homes will be needing bidders this week. However, CoreLogic data shows that is down from nearly 1,100 a year ago.

It is a similar picture in Sydney, where 684 homes will seek the highest bidder.

While CoreLogic expects auction activity to be lower week-on-week in the Harbour City, it shows volumes are set to remain somewhat steady year-on-year.

The only capital to put more homes through the auction room this week compared to last is Perth.

Last week was the busiest week for auctioneers since late May. Due to the higher volumes, the weighted average clearance rate improved during the week, with 73.5 per cent of auctions returning a successful result.
