The best auctioneers of each state and New Zealand are in Melbourne vying for the top spot.
It is part of the Australasian Auctioneering Championships, which is an annual event backed by the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) and the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). It showcases the finest auctioneers Australia and New Zealand have to offer, REIA president Adrian Kelly said.
While auctions are a regular feature in real estate, it will take a lot of talent to claim the trophy.
“Auctioneering requires a particular skill set, which includes a booming voice, a nimble and mathematical mind, and more than a touch of theatrical flair,” REIV president Leah Calnan said.
Thanks to New Zealand’s Harcourts Cooper & Co’s Andrew North, the trophy is in Kiwi hands, and they will not let go lightly.
“This year is the 21st anniversary of the competition, and so far, the Kiwis have brought home the trophy eight times,” REINZ chief executive Bindi Norwell said.
“The trophy resided in New Zealand for the past year, so let’s hope we can keep it on this side of the Tasman again this year.”
The pressure is now on New Zealand auctioneers Robert Tulp from LJ Hooker and Harcourts’ Aaron Davies, who competed yesterday and are waiting to see how they placed.
“We’ve been given the nickname ‘the ageing rookies’, but this week the Aussies will get to see a couple of veterans giving it their all to keep the cup in New Zealand!” Mr Tulp said.
The winner will be revealed at 7pm (AEST).
