Queensland’s Justin Nickerson has been crowned the 2019 Australasian Real Estate Institutes’ auctioneering champion.

The best auctioneers from each state and New Zealand gathered in Melbourne last week for the event, and the competition was stiff.

“There is always a real depth to the competition,” Mr Nickerson said.

“You go in the first day and look around, and you realise how difficult it is to win with all the quality.”

This is the third time he has won the top award. He went back-to-back in 2016 and 2017, putting him on the same level with New Zealand’s Mark Sumich.

“I made a mistake last year, so there was definitely a vie there to get it back,” Mr Nickerson said.

Additional to the competition, it was a chance to learn from other leading auctioneers.

He got to learn how other auctioneers handle different situations, and he is always on the lookout for one-liners.

“There are no original ideas, just recycled ones,” Mr Nickerson joked.

The event was designed to test an auctioneer’s skill and ability to command a crowd, manage issues and call complex bidding offers.

The judges made their decision on the winner after the five finalists were briefed and auctioned a property in St Kilda to mock-sell under the hammer.

“We have seen the cream of the auctioneering crop in action in Melbourne. It was very exciting and highly entertaining,” REIA president Adrian Kelly said.
