The latest ethics index did not rate real estate agents well, but the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) was not surprised.

The latest Governance Institute of Australia ethics index grouped real estate agents just above federal and state politicians as perceived as the most unethical occupations.

“I wasn’t surprised because we always tend to be at the bottom of the pile,” REIA president Adrian Kelly told Real Estate Business.

“The unusual thing about it is that hundreds and thousands of real estate agent get appointed by the public to look after their biggest asset.”

The institute surveyed more than 1,000 people to conclude with these results, but Mr Kelly does not think it would have made a difference if the sample size was larger.

“Real estate agents tend to be fair game,” he said.

The Real Estate Institute did not come out well in this report either. It ranked as one of the most unethical organisations, only above the Construction Forestry Maritime Mining Energy Union.

“Government departments, both state and federal, banks and a lot of other organisations use the resources we provide, and a lot of other information,” Mr Kelly said.

The information is sought-after by these institutes, so Mr Kelly has no reason to believe that what REIA and the state REIs are doing is wrong.
