The Real Estate Institute of New South Wales (REINSW) wants to see action to improve how the public views agents.
Last week, the Governance Institute of Australia’s annual ethics index was released, and real estate ranked towards the bottom, just above federal and state politicians.
Real estate agents always tend to rank bad in these surveys, but REINSW president Leanne Pilkington wants this data to pose as a direct challenge to the industry.
“We cannot accept these statistics and roll over,” she said. “It is clear we need to work to improve the way we are viewed by society.”
REINSW is working with the Pathway to Professionalism movement to work on improving how the public perceives agents.
Last week, more than 100 agents from across the state gathered at REINSW’s Industry Summit to discuss their commitment to improving consumer settlement.
“Agents need to realise in order to change the perception of the Australian public, we need to take the Pathway to Professionalism and improve as an entire cohort,” Ms Pilkington said.
Although perceptions will not change overnight, they will break if agents commit to do better, she said.
“We need to recognise where we are going wrong and improve.
“REINSW has run its Industry Summit for seven years and growing the professionalism of our industry has dominated most of them.”
At the event, it was made clear agents are prepared to work together and collaborate to improve their industry.
“Shifting consumer sentiment is only going to happen when we can demonstrate that our focus is completely on the consumers and what their needs are,” the president said.
