In our fast-paced and always on-demand industry, finding time to do the things you love outside of work can be hard.
Finding a brand and an agency that supports and gets involved in your life outside of work is even harder. But at the end of the day, real estate is about people and helping them achieve their ambitions.
I believe that one of the most important things a brand can do to nurture and retain talent is to provide them with personal development opportunities, whether it’s building a new skill or simply pursuing an inspiring passion in or out of the workplace. I also believe that my Principals and network, LJ Hooker, are in the same mindset; hence, I was comfortable asking for their support to pursue my life passion of sailing.
I’ve been sailing since I was a kid then work and family got in the way and sailing was put on the backburner. Then my passion for it was re-ignited at a charity event when I came across the Ocean Gem, a 45-foot Beneteau racing yacht, and its skipper David Hows; within a couple of weeks, I became one of its 11 crew members.
Since 2017, LJ Hooker has sponsored the Ocean Gem with the ethos of helping people achieve their aspirations, home ownership, investments or otherwise. The Ocean Gem has competed in more than 300 events with, I’m proud to say, outstanding results. We’re a crew of ‘amateur’ sailors yet we are excitingly getting ready to compete in the 2019 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race.
Anyone who is into sailing knows that the Sydney to Hobart race is the race of the year. It’s the race that you work all year to get to. This year’s Sydney to Hobart will be our second – both entries possible because of our sponsors; their support makes it possible for ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things.
So how does this impact my professional life? For me, the supportive behaviour of my Principals motivates me to perform better at work and encourages me to strive for the highest.
Sailing on the Ocean Gem means I’m exposed to many different people in many different locations. It also gives me the opportunity to engage and create strong community ties, which is so vital in our line of work. For my agency, it means the brand is connecting and building relationships with various communities too.
Relationships are our bread and butter in real estate and relationships, with colleagues, customers or crew members, are built on trust and commitment and working together to reach shared objectives. The stronger those relationships, the better the outcomes.
It’s a no-brainer that if you have good work-life balance and a fulfilling personal life, you’re going to walk into work much happier. Couple that with a positive work culture and your productivity will increase tenfold. So, if a business clearly cares about the personal development of its people, no doubt it will have a more engaged and motivated workplace, which directly links to performance and profitability over time. Therefore, working with people that support you is going to help you go far – as it certainly has for me.
