More than 20 teams hit the water last week in their sailboats as part of an event to raise money for Sailors with disABILITIES (SWD).
Combined, more than $100,000 was raised for the charity, and the sky cleared for the event, but it was a tough day as the charity’s founder admitted he had sore knees at the end of the day.
“I spent all day Thursday praying for good weather,” founder David Pescud said. “He, or She, heard me and delivered a beautiful day on Sydney Harbour. It was an absolute cracker.”
McGrath was one of several organisations who sponsored the event last Friday, and SWD patron and former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull took part in the race.
Back at the Rushcutters Bay Cruising Yacht Club, Mr Turnbull announced that all 24 entrants were winners.
This is the third year a McGrath team has taken to the harbour for the charity.
“It’s humbling to be out there on the harbour with people young and old, able-bodied and disabled, all enjoying the water,” agent Kevin Mendes said.
“The funds raised for SWD have an immediate impact on the lives of the children when they’re out in the Making Waves boats.”
“To be able to be out on the harbour and have fun is something we take for granted,” agent and sailor Imran Hamidi said.
“We’re able-bodied, but to share the sport and the opportunity to sail with these kids, it’s just so special and something we’ll continue to be part of.”
