A Queensland agent has decided to venture out on his own, kicking off his own real estate business in Gympie.
After being crowned the Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s regional salesperson of the year in 2020, Johnathon Merton decided it was time to build his own personal brand.
Revealing that the award had encouraged his desire for further growth, Mr Merton established Merton Property Co in the Queensland town, having previously worked as a salesperson with Laguna Real Estate.
“I want my kids to witness my growth, and I want to keep testing my limits. Now, success really is up to me,” he stated.
With UrbanX backing his plans, the new business owner said he sees huge opportunity in adopting technology and mobility.
“I really want to be up to date with as much new tech as possible. So, over the next six to 12 months, I’ll be knuckling down and learning as much as I can while still working hard on winning listings and getting the best results for my clients.”
The agent has only been in the industry since 2017, after a civil construction work accident forced him to reflect on his life, and ultimately saw him commence real estate training with REIQ.
He said: “In my old job, you’d work in crews of guys and everyone would get paid the same, regardless of how hard you’d be working. I wanted to back myself and be in an industry where you get rewarded for the effort you put in.”
He admits that he had contemplated taking up the real estate profession when he was in his 20s, but ultimately “ran off with my tail between my legs and ventured into other things”.
“But the desire to take on real estate sales never left me,” he expressed.
Now, he’s taking on a business venture of his own, with the full backing of UrbanX CEO Dan Argent, who Mr Merton said “showed a genuine interest in my plans”.
He said: “Dan instilled a lot of confidence in me on what they do to support you as an agent and business owner, and at the end of the day if I can just focus on listing and selling instead of the backend stuff, then I don’t have to worry.
“It’s still early days, but I’m feeling totally re-energised about this industry and my future with UrbanX.”
