The Australian Capital Territory has had a confirmed case of COVID-19 — and it will have implications for the real estate profession from 5pm today.
According to a statement from the ACT government, “this is by far the most serious public health risk the ACT has faced in the past 12 months, and that’s why the ACT is introducing a strict lockdown in response to this positive case”.
Between 5pm on 12 August and 5pm on 19 August, Canberrans are being asked to only leave their homes for essential reasons — essential employment, healthcare (including a COVID-19 vaccination), essential groceries and supplies, and up to one hour of outdoor exercise.
Speaking live on Real Estate Exposed today with Tom Panos and Phil Tarrant, the deputy president of the REIACT, Stan Platis, said he had received confirmation that real estate services would be impacted by the lockdown.
“Real estate services and auction houses, house inspections, in-person inspections are not permitted,” he told REB.
“Only online inspections are permitted.
“Only online auctions will be permitted over the next seven days, with in-room auctions also disallowed.”
Stating that while property management details have not been released, Mr Platis expressed the belief that “an inspection is an inspection”.
“And you can’t do them,” he said.
“At the end of the day, from the REI’s perspective, and the government’s — this is Delta strain. This is full lockdown.”
Mr Platis, who is also an executive director at Independent Property Group, indicated that the REIACT will be doing daily briefings with the government, and will push out further information as it comes to hand. Mr Platis also revealed on Real Estate Exposed that he will be doing Facebook briefings to members on a daily basis.
REB will also continue to monitor the situation.
