“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” —Michael Jordan
Building a team is one of the most crucial parts when starting your own business. You might have already figured out the hiring process, but bringing together a diverse set of individuals can pose a whole different set of challenges. It’s not enough to hire the best of the best, you also need to ensure that they work as a team. Business success is influenced by a lot of factors and great teamwork is one of them. Here are some of the most common problems you will face when building a team.
Lacking diversity
Consider what you need to accomplish or the scope of the project before hiring people to become part of your team. You might find that your team members, as good as they are, possess the same set of skills. Your team needs a diverse set of skills in order to be fully equipped to face future challenges.
Poor communication
If the leader does not communicate with the team, there is no direction. If a team member does not communicate with his or her teammates, the project flow might suffer. If the team does not communicate with the leader, the management will have no idea which stages the project is in. Communication is what holds the team together. Without it, everything just falls apart.
Lacking trust
Trust is essential if you want your team to perform at their highest level. Without it, engagement and collaboration become non-existent. They’ll tend to work as individuals instead of a team and, eventually, communication breaks down. Allow your team to get to know each other so they can slowly build trust over time. It might be a slow process, but it pays off big time.
Conflicts
As a team is composed of unique individuals with different opinions, expect conflict and tension to arise. If managed properly, conflicts or differing opinions can be healthy for the team. Discussions and expressing different opinions can lead to awesome ideas and collaborations between teammates. However, if left unchecked, it can cause rifts to form between teammates or even the formation of groups within the team.
Poor work environment
Talent and skill can only go so far. Your team needs to have a good working environment so they perform at their best. If you and your team are working virtually, then agree as a team on which software and platforms to use to complete your project.
