Off the back of a massive December for auctions, there’s still an unusually large number of auctions taking place across Australia’s capital cities in the lead up to Christmas Day.
In its last CoreLogic auction market preview for 2021, the research group noted that auction activity normally begins to taper off after the second week of December as a result of slowing market activity in the lead up to Christmas.
But with COVID-19 wiping out much of the spring selling season this year, the drop in activity has been delayed.
Last week’s 4,783 auctions came in as the second-busiest weekend for auctions since CoreLogic first keeping records back in 2008.
This week, the week ending 26 December, is the first week to display the inevitable “drop” ahead of Christmas – but it’s still far higher than seen in previous years.
Melbourne is set to see just under half of the scheduled activity this week, with 289 homes going under the hammer.
Sydney is expecting 164 auctions of its own in the countdown to Christmas Day.
Showing that the recent flurry of activity isn’t restricted to the bigger markets, both Adelaide and Brisbane will be playing host to 48 auctions of their own, while Canberra is anticipating 38 of its own ahead of the festive public holidays.
In Perth, 10 vendors are hoping to find buyers before Santa lands on their doorsteps, while Tasmanians have already settled in for the silly season, with no auctions scheduled.
