After a huge 2021, the former Queensland partner of Cooley is now heading up his own auction agency.
David Holmes has unveiled “holmes” as his latest venture, having previously held roles as the Queensland state manager at Homely, a director at Metro Auctions, and the national auction manager at LJ Hooker prior to his stint at Cooley.
The new agency comes after Mr Holmes recorded a 226 per cent increase in auctions over the 2021 calendar year and was crowned Real Estate Institute of Queensland auctioneer of the year.
Reflecting on the year that was, the business owner acknowledges that many experienced auction agents delivered premium results for vendors over 2021 but said he had also worked with numerous agents “who were newcomers to the sales method”.
The agency founder has expressed his excitement at his latest career move, which he indicated does come as vendors continue to capitalise on buyer demand.
“We’re particularly bullish about Brisbane and the Gold Coast now that Queensland’s domestic border has re-opened,” he commented, adding that he is confident agents across holmes’ key market areas “will continue to embrace the auction process throughout 2022”.
Citing data from CoreLogic, Mr Holmes has indicated that Brisbane is yet to experience a slowdown to the pace of growth – as has occurred in Sydney and Melbourne.
While national price growth was down at 3.9 per cent over the last quarter, Brisbane still reported gains of 8.5 per cent.
Weighing in on the statistic, the auctioneer said: “Queensland offers comparative value to the southern states and now that professionals need little more than reliable internet to work and live where they want, that’s amplifying competition at auctions.
“About one in three bidders at auctions over 2021 were bidding via online. Whilst they were unable to travel from interstate to bid in-person, the desire to get into the Queensland market remained strong.”
Holmes is set to service the Brisbane and Gold Coast markets up in Queensland, as well as NSW’s Northern Rivers and ACT.
