“The Australian property services industry stands with the people of Ukraine,” are the words of Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) president Hayden Groves.

In a show of solidarity for the country, which has been under attack from Russian forces for the past month, Mr Groves said that the institute “condemns the invasion of Ukraine, as Russia’s actions cause humanitarian devastation and threatens world geopolitical stability and democratic freedoms”.

Acknowledging that the recent events in Ukraine have shocked and disturbed people across the world, Mr Groves said the REIA recognises its responsibility to use its influence “to contribute to a collective voice of organisations, countries and companies working together to call for a diplomatic solution to end the war”.

He highlighted how many Australian corporations and businesses had ceased their business interests and operations in Russia, while recognising it as “not necessarily applicable for Australian real estate agencies”.

“However, it is important to note that REIA is part of an international real estate community and is part of Europe’s community more specifically through our alliance with the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI).”

Iterating the institutes support for the FIABCI’s response to events in Ukraine, the president noted the safety of the international community as an “immediate priority”.

FIABCI has offered its support to all members impacted by the conflict – as well as their families – and set up a donation drive.

Its own statement on the conflict had revealed that FIABCI-Deutschland and FIABCI-Hungary members Michael von Hauff and László Gönczi, along with others, had been offering shelter and transportation to citizens currently fleeing Ukraine, particularly through the Hungarian border.

FIABCI world president Jordi Ribó has commented that the organisation “endorses the message of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and calls on all parties to use exclusively diplomatic means to solve the conflict on the basis of international law”.
